On April 14-16, Astana hosted TechCamp Kazakhstan to create a sustainable network of representatives of the private sector, civil society, media, and influencers to strengthen media literacy in the region.
Chaired by the U.S. Mission to Kazakhstan, the Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs (ECA) at the U.S. Department of State, and local partner MediaNet International Center for Journalism, the 3-day regional seminar focused on fact-checking tools and A.I. services, mobilography, media literacy, cybersecurity, SMM, and crowdfunding.
In his welcoming speech, the U.S. Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Daniel Rosenblum, said that the technological development of the past four decades has made lives easier and more efficient in many ways.
‘These innovations have speeded up communication and made reaching our friends, colleagues, and families easier. But new technology has also made it easier to spread disinformation. As we receive information by the minute on our phones, computers, and televisions, we must think critically about the accuracy and source of such information’, the U.S. Ambassador added.
At the end of the event, the participants presented several drafts of group projects developed with the support of trainers during the event. Next, the project partners will select the most innovative, technological, and practical ideas and fund their implementation this year.
