Finland plans to build a 75-kilometer fence along its border with Russia to counter illegal migration and enhance security, with the wall expanding to 200 kilometers by 2026, Reuters reports.
The fence will be three meters high and equipped with barbed wire, night video surveillance, lighting, and speakers.
President Sauli Niinisto has emphasized Finland's continued responsibility for its security, despite joining NATO on April 4 as its 31st member. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Finland has increased its focus on regional security issues, given its 1,340-kilometer border with Russia.
