Kyrgyz MPs discussed proposed changes related to education, 24.kg reports.
The amendments suggest granting special status to five higher educational institutions in the country, as well as allowing universities to have financial autonomy. This means rectors will be able to use funds from a special account to meet the institutions' needs.
Deputy Minister of Education, Rasul Abazbek Uulu, believes that universities having financial freedom will enable them to improve educational, material, and technical resources. He gave an example of the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University named after K.I. Skryabin, which rented out its dining room through a tender process, and the tenant subleased the premises.
MP Dastan Bekeshev criticized the state of education in Kyrgyzstan, claiming that it is overly formal, and students cannot even write basic letters. He also shared complaints from students at Kyrgyz National University and Kyrgyz State Law Academy, who reported that teachers were superficially conducting lessons, and despite being legally related to the former, the cost of the contract had not been reduced.
