Kyiv city mayor Vitali Klitschko on Monday (October 17) said Russia is a "terrorist country" after residential buildings were hit during drone strikes in the Ukrainian capital.
Klitschko spoke to reporters after Russian drones struck buildings in Shevchenkivskyi district, near a central Kyiv railway station, during a rush-hour attack in the morning that caused several fires and damaged residential blocks.
Klitschko added a woman was killed in the drone attack and one person was still trapped under the rubble.
Thick clouds of grey smoke rose from the building as emergency workers, fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles attended to the damage.
Russia attacked the centre of Kyiv during morning rush hour with drones and shelled other cities around the country.
It was the second time in a week Moscow has unleashed strikes across Ukraine while its forces face setbacks on the battlefield.
Soldiers fired into the air trying to shoot down drones after the blasts rocked central Kyiv.
Residents fled for shelter.
An anti-aircraft rocket could be seen streaking into the morning sky, followed by an explosion and orange flames.
Reuters witnesses later saw pieces of a drone used in the attack that bore the words: "For Belgorod" - an apparent reference to the Ukrainian shelling of a Russian region bordering Ukraine.
The attacks came exactly one week after Russia unleashed its heaviest aerial bombardment of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities since the start of the war - also during morning rush hour.
