Iran and Tajikistan have announced to drop visa requirements for each other’s air travelers, effective February 3, 2025, according to VisaGuide. This new arrangement aims to foster stronger diplomatic and economic relations, as well as promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
The agreement, which will allow nationals of both countries to travel between Tehran and Dushanbe without needing a visa, marks a significant step toward greater cooperation.
However, travelers should note that the visa-free policy comes with certain limitations. Under the terms of the agreement, citizens of Iran and Tajikistan will be allowed to stay in each other's territory for a maximum of 30 days within any 90-day period. For stays exceeding 30 days, individuals will need to apply for a long-term visa.
The move is expected to have a positive impact on the tourism industries of both nations. Iran’s Minister of Tourism, Reza Salehi Amiri, expressed optimism about the agreement, predicting a substantial increase in tourist arrivals from Tajikistan. Currently, around 8,000 Tajik nationals visit Iran annually, but with the new visa-free arrangement, the country is hoping to attract up to 100,000 visitors from Tajikistan each year.
Similarly, Tajikistan is anticipating a rise in Iranian visitors as a result of the lifted visa requirement. The agreement is expected to stimulate greater cross-border travel and enhance the cultural exchange between the two countries.
According to the VisaGuide Passport Index, Iran’s passport currently ranks 172nd globally, granting visa-free access to just 19 countries. Iranian passport holders face visa requirements for entry into 150 countries. The new visa-free travel agreement with Tajikistan will provide some relief, although it will not significantly impact Iran’s overall passport ranking.
Tajikistan’s passport ranks 141st, higher than Iran’s by 31 positions. Tajik nationals can currently travel to 24 countries without a visa, though they still require one to enter 149 nations.
