Uzbekistan purchases nearly $1mn of green energy from residents in 2024

Uzbekistan purchases nearly $1mn of green energy from residents in 2024

Uzbekistan allocated UZS 12.18bn ($940,903) in subsidies to citizens under the Solar Home program in 2024 for the electricity generated by their solar panels,  according to the Tax Committee's press service.

The initiative program launched in April 2023, allows residents to sell the electricity produced by their solar systems back to the national grid.

In 2024, 10,826 individuals participated in the program, receiving a total subsidy of UZS 12.18bn (12,2mn kWh) from the state budget for solar energy supplied to the electricity grid.

The program has proven successful, with UZS 7.37bn ($569,331) of payments made between August and December alone. This equates to approximately 12.18mn kilowatt-hours (kWh) of solar energy produced at a rate of UZS 1,000 (less than a dollar) per kWh.

Among the regions, Khorezm led the way with payments of UZS 2.8bn ($216,299), followed by Karakalpakstan with UZS 1.9bn ($146,775), and Tashkent with UZS 1.4bn ($108,149). The initiative aims to promote renewable energy use and reduce dependence on traditional power sources.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev first announced the solar subsidies in February 2023. Payments are made through the Soliq app, which transfers the funds directly to citizens’ bank cards by the 25th of each month.

To support the growing solar industry, President Mirziyoyev also ordered that solar panel components be exempt from import duties and VAT starting in August.

This policy aims to level the playing field between local manufacturers and importers, encouraging more competition and further expanding solar energy adoption across the country.

In 2025, Uzbekistan plans to increase its green energy share from 16% to 26% of total capacity, showcasing its commitment to sustainable development. The country has made progress in renewable energy, with 16 solar and wind plants and 35 small hydroelectric plants already in operation.

Plans for 2025 include 16 new solar and wind plants, five hydroelectric plants, energy storage facilities, and an additional 1 gigawatt of renewable energy projects.
