President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan met with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), on June 5, discussing Uzbekistan's progress towards WTO accession.
They reviewed the practical measures undertaken, including Working Group meeting on May 24 and ongoing negotiations with member countries. Efforts to harmonize national legislation with WTO standards were also discussed.
The meeting highlighted the importance of cooperation in developing a green economy, promoting e-commerce, and enhancing the export of digital services.
Uzbekistan proposed the establishment of a Competence Center in trade policy with WTO support to bolster expertise in international trade matters.
President Mirziyoyev expressed appreciation for Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala's participation in discussions with students and her honorary doctorate from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy. In turn, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala affirmed the WTO's support for Uzbekistan's accession efforts.
On June 3, Uzbekistan reaffirmed its commitment to WTO membership and ended exclusive rights of state-owned enterprises. The president signed a decree, revoking the exclusive privileges of several state-owned companies to engage in economic activities. This decree reflects the government's commitment to implementing vital reforms aimed at establishing a free market economy.
