Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored a historic goal for Uzbekistan, but Colombia secured a 3-1 victory in the country's first-ever FIFA World Cup match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on June 18.
The Group K encounter marked a landmark moment for Uzbek football as the national team made its long-awaited World Cup debut against one of South America's strongest sides in front of 80,824 spectators.
Uzbekistan attempted to dominate early in the match, but Eldor Shomurodov was unable to reach Abbosbek Fayzullayev’s cross into the penalty area. Colombia responded with a series of attacks, including one dangerous effort that narrowly missed the target.
Midway through the first half, a powerful strike from Luis Diaz rattled the post. In the 34th minute, Abdukodir Khusanov was shown a yellow card after committing a foul on Luis Diaz.
Colombia's pressure eventually paid off in the 41st minute when Diaz delivered a cross for Daniel Munoz, who finished clinically to put the South Americans ahead before halftime.
First-half statistics highlighted Colombia's dominance. The South Americans held 72% possession, generated 0.83 expected goals (xG) compared with Uzbekistan's 0.02, and registered seven shots to Uzbekistan's one.
Head coach Fabio Cannavaro responded at halftime by introducing Farrukh Sayfiyev and Dostonbek Khamdamov, and the changes helped Uzbekistan produce a much stronger second-half performance.
The equalizer arrived in the 61st minute. After Shomurodov's effort was saved by the Colombian goalkeeper, Fayzullaev reacted quickest to head home the rebound, becoming the first player in history to score for Uzbekistan at a FIFA World Cup.
The celebrations were short-lived, however. Five minutes later, Diaz restored Colombia's lead with a powerful strike that beat goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov.
Uzbekistan continued pushing for another equalizer during the closing stages, but Colombia struck again late in the match when Jaminton Campaz found the net to seal a 3-1 victory.
The result leaves Colombia top of Group K with three points. Earlier, Portugal and DR Congo played out a draw, meaning both sides collected one point, while Uzbekistan remains without points after the opening round.
Uzbekistan will next face Portugal on June 23 in a crucial Group K fixture, while Colombia takes on DR Congo on June 24. The final round of group-stage matches is scheduled for June 28, when Uzbekistan meets DR Congo and Colombia faces Portugal.
