Port Aktau, Kazakhstan, achieved a milestone in May 2024 by setting a new monthly record for container handling, surpassing 5,100 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). This achievement marks an increase from its previous best, Railway Supply reported.
From January to May 2024, Port Aktau handled a total of over 15,800 TEUs, demonstrating a growth of 5,300 TEUs compared to the same period last year. This represents a 1.5-fold increase in container throughput year-over-year.
A substantial portion of these containers, specifically over 14,300 TEUs, were transported via the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. This route saw an uptick of 7,100 TEUs compared to the previous year, nearly doubling the volume of cargo transported through this strategic corridor.
Looking ahead, Port Aktau has plans to enhance its operational capabilities further. In August 2024, the port intends to acquire several reach stackers and a portal crane with a lifting capacity of 65 tons. These investments are expected to bolster efficiency and accommodate the growing demand for container handling services at Port Aktau.
The record-breaking performance of Port Aktau stresses its growing importance as a key hub in the region, facilitating vital trade connections and contributing to Kazakhstan's broader economic objectives.
Aktau Sea Port in Kazakhstan is strategically located on the Caspian Sea's eastern coast, serving as a vital hub for international transport. It facilitates year-round, 24/7 transportation of various cargoes across multiple global corridors, linking east-to-west and north-to-south routes.
The port is managed by "Kazakhstan Temir Zholy," part of the state program NURLY ZHOL, and plays a significant role in initiatives like the "New Silk Road." It is also expanding its operations to include container transportation and actively participates in the Trans-Caspian International Transit (TCIT).
