Kazakhstan will see the construction of a new $1.5 bn copper plant, the prime minister's press service reports. The project is a collaboration between China Nonferrous Metal Industry’s Foreign Engineering and Construction (responsible for design and equipment supply), NFC Kazakhstan (construction contractor), and KAZ Minerals Smelting (customer). The agreement was formalized during an official ceremony attended by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.
The plant will be situated near the Aktogay settlement in the Abay region. The project is slated for completion in 2028 and will have an annual capacity of 300,000 tons of copper, creating over 1,000 jobs.
This facility will process copper concentrate from the Bozshakol and Aktogay mining complexes and Vostoktsvetment’s enrichment facilities. It will be among the largest factories producing high-value-added products in Kazakhstan, catering to the domestic demand for cupric products and copper cathode.
The plant will primarily produce copper cathode, a key material used in energy and machinery construction, along with gold, silver, and sulfuric acid.
Prime Minister Bektenov underscored the project's importance, stating, "The president has directed us to pursue sustainable economic growth. The construction of a new copper plant is a significant industrial project that can enhance copper production and support our national economy. The copper sector is vital to our industry, and its robust development is essential."
China Nonferrous Metal Industry’s Foreign Engineering and Construction Company (Nonferrous China), a state-owned enterprise listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, is leading the project. NFC was the first Chinese company to invest in mining and nonferrous metal processing projects outside of mainland China and operates in over 20 countries. KAZ Minerals has previously partnered with NFC on projects such as Bozshakol, Aktogay, and Bozymchak.
