Kazakhstan's aviation sector is gearing up for upgrades this summer, with three airports set to unveil new terminals, according to Sarsen Zharylgasov, Deputy Chairman of the country's Civil Aviation Committee, in an interview with 24KZ TV channel, ato comm reported on April 25.
Simultaneously, construction of new passenger terminals is nearing completion at Shymkent and Kyzylorda airports. In Shymkent, a new 4-story terminal is poised to escalate the airport's capacity from 500,000 to 6 mn passengers per year. Similarly, the upcoming terminal in Kyzylorda will enable the airport to cater to 250 passengers per hour.
Crucially, all three terminal projects are financed by private investors, with a total investment of 150 bn tenge ($337 mn). Additionally, government support has been instrumental in refurbishing Pavlodar airport's terminal and reconstructing taxiways at Balkhash airport in the Karaganda region.
Further infrastructure enhancements are slated, including the overhaul of Astana airport's runway by a private investor from May to December.
The imperative for airport infrastructure development stems from the escalating air traffic in Kazakhstan, which surged by 20% last year, with local airlines ferrying 13.3 mn passengers, and airports collectively serving 26 mn passengers. This growth trajectory persisted in the first quarter of 2024, with 3.3 mn passengers served.
Earlier Daryo reported that on April 16, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced plans for the development of a fresh cargo terminal at Tashkent International Airport.
