In a move aimed at bolstering educational ties between South Korea and Kazakhstan, a memorandum of understanding has been inked for the establishment of a branch of Woosong University in Turkestan, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan reported. The agreement, signed during the working visit of Kazakhstan's Minister of Science and Higher Education, Sayasat Nurbek, to South Korea, underscores the growing collaboration between the two nations in the realm of higher education.
The memorandum, signed between the akimat (city administration) of the Turkestan region and the management of Woosong University, paves the way for the establishment of the branch on the premises of an existing university in Turkestan. Additionally, the akimat has pledged to extend support by providing necessary infrastructure, including hostel facilities, and other technical assistance to ensure the smooth functioning of the branch.
Minister Nurbek highlighted the swift progress in reaching the agreement, noting that discussions for the branch's establishment had commenced during a delegation visit from Woosong University to Kazakhstan earlier in February 2024. He emphasized the Ministry of Science and Higher Education's ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with Korean universities, citing the recent establishment of the SeulTech Higher School of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics in Kyzylorda, and plans for a branch of KAIST, a renowned technical university, in Kazakhstan.
During his visit to South Korea, Minister Nurbek engaged with various academic institutions, further exploring avenues for collaboration. Discussions were held with the rector of Jei University, renowned for its expertise in IT, engineering, and drone manufacturing. The talks centered on facilitating the enrollment of Kazakhstani students at Jei University and fostering the development of higher education in both countries.
Furthermore, Minister Nurbek visited Seoul Cyber University, where he acquainted himself with its infrastructure and operational framework. Discussions ensued on the potential for exchange programs and sharing best practices among university rectors, underscoring the commitment to mutual learning and collaboration in the field of higher education.
