A regional seminar "Methods for the development and calculation of e-commerce volumes in Central Asia" took place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan from February 29 to March 1, 2024, the Statistics Agency under the president of Uzbekistan reported. This seminar, held with the support of the World Bank, brought together experts and representatives from various countries and international organizations to deliberate on pertinent issues surrounding e-commerce metrics and strategies for the Central Asian region.
Participating remotely was the Deputy Director of the Statistics Agency under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Agzam Ikramov, along with other officials from the Agency's central office.
The seminar saw a diverse array of attendees, including representatives from statistical agencies of Canada, Albania, Slovenia, Tajikistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Kazakhstan. Moreover, experts from renowned international organizations such as UNCTAD and the e-GATE initiative of the World Bank graced the event. There were also delegates from prominent e-commerce platforms like Alibaba, adding a practical industry perspective to the discussions. Among the participants were Sherzod Muminov from the Department of Statistics of Foreign Economic Activity and Trade and Elena Afanasyevna Khan from the Department of Statistics of the Service Sector.
The inauguration of the seminar was marked by an opening speech delivered by Deputy Director Agzam Ikramov of the Agency of Statistics under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Throughout the event, attendees engaged in robust discussions regarding the global challenges associated with measuring the volume of e-commerce. Central themes included the identification of standardized methodologies crucial for tracking e-commerce activities effectively within the region. These discussions are expected to pave the way for the development of comprehensive strategies aimed at fostering the digital economy's growth across Central Asia.

Earlier the World Bank disclosed plans to introduce an e-commerce readiness index specifically for Uzbekistan, set to be revealed by the end of the current year. This announcement was made by Ilkhom Aliyev, an e-commerce specialist from the World Bank, during the International PLUS Forum conducted in Tashkent. The purpose of this index is to evaluate the readiness of different regions within Uzbekistan for participating in e-commerce endeavors. Initial assessments indicate that Tashkent exhibits the highest level of readiness, while the Surkhandarya region shows a relatively lower level of preparedness.
