Turkmen Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmed Gurbanov met with Ali Bagheri, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs in Tehran, IRNA reports.
The diplomats assessed regional and international developments and "emphasized the necessity of continuing consultations between the two neighboring countries". Iran and Turkmenistan share a border of more than 1,000km.
"Since Turkmenistan's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Tehran and Ashgabat have enjoyed good relations and have cooperated in economic, transportation, infrastructure development, and energy sectors."
Gurbanov previously headed his country's diplomatic mission in Iran.
Experts told Daryo that the two countries, which are also neighbours on the Caspian Sea, plan to sign a 20-year cooperation agreement.
Iran and Turkmenistan have jointly implemented a number of major projects. In addition to cross-border gas pipelines and power lines, they have jointly built the Dostluk (Friendship) dam and the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway.
