The United Nations’ World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ranked Kazakhstan 81st in its Global Innovation Index, marking an improvement from its 83rd position last year. Among the 132 countries listed in the index, Kazakhstan now ranks third in Central and South Asia, trailing only India and Iran.
Kazakhstan has been recognized for several key areas of innovation. The government’s online services have been particularly noted, securing the 8th position globally. The country also ranks 15th for E-participation, indicating a strong digital presence in governance.
In terms of education and employment, Kazakhstan holds the 32nd position for females employed with advanced degrees and the 33rd position in the QS university ranking. The country also boasts a high tertiary enrolment rate, placing it 35th in this category. Furthermore, Kazakhstan’s high-tech exports have earned it the 36th position globally.
Despite these strengths, there are several areas where Kazakhstan’s performance could be improved. The country ranks 124th in software spending, 118th in the state of cluster development, and 117th in university-industry R&D collaboration. Additionally, it holds the 98th position in venture capital and the 88th position in GERD financed abroad.
In the Central and Southern Asia region, Kazakhstan has risen to the 3rd position, displacing Uzbekistan to the 4th spot. Uzbekistan maintains its 82nd position overall. The report highlights that only Kazakhstan and Nepal (108th) have improved their rankings within the region.
