In 2023, Kyrgyzstan saw a rise in registered victims of family violence, with the number exceeding 13,000 individuals. This alarming statistic was reported by Janyl Alybaeva, the Deputy Minister of Labour, Social Security and Migration, at the National Forum “Mobilisation of Resources for Effective Assistance to Survivors of Gender-Based Violence”.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, by the end of 2023, the number of registered victims of domestic violence stood at 13,104 individuals. Disturbingly, women constituted 95% of these victims.
Despite the concerning rise in the number of victims, Alybaeva highlighted a silver lining: the increase in reported and investigated cases of domestic violence. This trend suggests a growing awareness and publicisation of such incidents.
Support for Victims
Kyrgyzstan has 18 crisis centres dedicated to assisting women and girls affected by domestic violence. These centres receive annual support from the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Migration as part of the State social order.
The funding allocated for these centres saw an increase in 2024, rising from KGS 7 mn to 12 mn ($78,273 to $134,183). This boost in resources is expected to enhance the support and services provided to victims of domestic violence.
