In a bid to foster joint renewable energy initiatives, the United Kingdom extends a collaborative hand to Kazakhstan. This endeavor unfolded during a pivotal meeting held on February 6, where Almassadam Satkaliyev, the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, engaged with British Ambassador Katherine Leach and a distinguished British delegation, the Ministry of Energy reported.
During the meeting, the British side introduced the UK Program Fund for Central Asia Water and Energy Program (CAWEP), boasting a generous total funding of £19-20mn over a three-year span.
The British delegation familiarized themselves with Kazakhstan's strategic plans for gradually decarbonizing the economy, aligning with the goals outlined in the Strategy for achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The UK government expressed readiness to collaborate on joint initiatives, particularly in the realm of renewable energy such as wind and solar power, infrastructure enhancements for electrical networks, transitioning coal plants to gas, as well as exploring research opportunities in hydrogen energy, biogas, and carbon capture technologies.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's announcement of Kazakhstan's decision to join the Global Methane Pledge during COP-28 in December 2023 was also highlighted. This decision significantly broadens Kazakhstan's prospects for securing financing for low-carbon technology projects, a move acknowledged and appreciated by the British delegation.
Wrapping up the productive dialogue, the UK delegation expressed gratitude to Minister Satkaliyev for the constructive engagement.
About CAWEP
The Central Asia Water and Energy Program (CAWEP) addresses the intricate nexus between water and energy systems in the Central Asian region. Established in 2009, CAWEP operates under the partnership of the World Bank, the European Union, Switzerland (through SECO), and the United Kingdom (through DFID).
With a focus on three pillars - energy security, energy-water linkages, and water security - CAWEP aims to strengthen the enabling environment to promote energy and water security at both regional and national levels.
Structured around data analysis, capacity building, and investment support, CAWEP collaborates with governments, regional organizations, civil society, and development partners to enhance sector performance and address national priorities while fostering regional cooperation.
Through partnerships and dialogue, CAWEP seeks to create an environment conducive to achieving energy and water security in Central Asia, leveraging investments and resources to maximize impact and sustainability.
