The “El-Yurt Umid” fund, established in 2018, will be transferred to the Presidential Administration. This decision was announced at a meeting chaired by Shavkat Mirziyoyev on February 5.
Prioritizing Engineering and Technology Education
The fund, which was initially created to train specialists abroad and communicate with compatriots, will now prioritize the training of qualified and high-quality engineers and technologists. This shift in focus is part of a broader effort to prepare young individuals for the global labor market. A new system of education abroad will be introduced, with the aim of fostering a generation of competitive and highly qualified personnel.
In 2022, the fund announced 420 places in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs for the training of specialists abroad. The fund aims to finance scholarships for young Uzbek students to enroll in master’s and doctoral programs within prestigious foreign universities and research centers.
Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation’s New Task
The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation has been tasked with studying 116 universities. The goal is to develop a program for their expansion and to define specific criteria for granting them the status of “national”, “state” university, academy, or institute.
This initiative is part of a larger effort to modernize the country’s higher education system. The Ministry is also instructed to cut the number of bachelor’s degree specializations by 40% by consolidating them and updating the curricula based on programs from the top 300 universities worldwide.
