There is a significant expansion of fresh herbs from Uzbekistan and Iran into the markets of the eastern EU countries, as per the EastFruit. This trend is particularly noticeable in Poland, where parsley and dill from these Central Asian countries dominate supermarket shelves.
Supermarket preferences
Supermarkets show a preference for greens from Central Asian countries, while in wholesale markets and unorganised trade, there are quite a lot of greens from Spain, Italy, and other southern EU countries. However, when it comes to packaged greens, they are almost all supplied exclusively from EU countries.
Advantages of greens from Uzbekistan and Iran
Trade representatives believe that the main advantage of greens from Uzbekistan and Iran is a longer sell-by date. These countries grow slightly different varieties, which could explain the longer shelf life.
Parsley and dill are less popular in western and southern EU countries than in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Therefore, it is Uzbekistan and Iran that dominate this segment.
