On January 20, 2024, law enforcement officials raided construction facilities in Yekaterinburg among migrants who “violated” Russian migration legislation. The raid was conducted to identify and detain individuals who violated the country’s migration laws.
Forced to walk in a row
According to a video taken during the raid, the security forces forced the workers to walk in a row. The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of migrant workers in Russia.
The number of internal and international immigrants in Russia exceeded that of emigrants in every year of the observed period. In 2021, the net migration was 429,900, Statista reports. The report also states that there are around 500,000 legal migrants and between five and 15 million undocumented migrants in Russia, representing between 5% and 7% of the economically active population.
The country has been tightening its migration laws to curb the influx of illegal immigrants. In 2022, the Russian government introduced a new law that made it easier to deport foreign nationals who violate the country’s migration laws, the International Labour Organization reported. The law also increased the penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants.
