Turkmenistan is currently studying the issue of accession to the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture, according to the Foreign Ministry.
This was stated by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan, Vepa Hajiyev, during a roundtable discussion with the representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for Central Asia, Matilda Bogner.
It was noted that the Convention against Torture is a key international document aimed at protecting human rights and preventing torture and ill-treatment.
"Turkmenistan, a state party to this document since April 1999, strives to comply with all international human rights standards and obligations, and in this context, the topic of current discussions is especially important."
Participants expressed the opinion that Turkmenistan is actively working to improve the justice system and conditions of detention in places of detention, and also conducts open dialogue and cooperation on issues of preventing the possibility of torture.
The Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture, a treaty supplementing the 1984 UN Convention Against Torture, provides for an international system of inspection of places of detention.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan reported earlier that in July the heads of diplomatic missions of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Romania, the United States and the delegation of the European Union visited the correctional labor institution in the Akhal region.
Turkmenistan regularly holds clemency campaigns, usually on the eve of commemorative dates including Flag Day (19 February), Independence Day (27 September) and Muslim holidays.
