Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan have approximated the construction expenses for the Trans-Afghan railway at nearly $7bn, Azernews reports.
Recently, the Minister of Transport, Ilkhom Mahkamov, engaged in discussions in Pakistan with local industry departments, and prominent transport and logistics companies NLC-Logistics and TCS.
The collaborative project for the construction of the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan railway is envisioned as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) under the Build-Operate-Transfer format. The involved parties have also reached a consensus on fostering multimodal transportation along the Trans-Afghan corridor. This entails a commitment to reduce transportation fees, streamline cargo transportation processes, and expedite railway construction in Afghanistan.
The Trans-Afghan Highway initiative was initiated in 2018, initially valued at $5bn with an annual transportation potential of 20mn tons of cargo. In July 2022, Uzbekistan Railways provided cost estimations, with the institute, "Boshtransloyikha," assessing the construction of the railway at $4.6bn, projecting a completion timeline of five years.
Last December, Pakistan had earlier projected the railway's construction between Pakistan and Uzbekistan to cost $8.2bn.
