The Taliban's interim government spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, responded to former U.S. President Donald Trump's recent statements regarding the Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, Daryo correspondent in Afghanistan reported.
Mujahid, while addressing the media, asserted that the Taliban would not entertain discussions about Trump's proposal and emphasized that Afghanistan would not become a battleground for regional and global powers.
"Trump has not shown any political direction yet. We do not need to discuss his statements much, but in general, we will never allow Afghanistan to become a competitive arena for other states," Mujahid clarified.
This response comes in the wake of Donald Trump's public announcement during a rally in Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he expressed his intention to negotiate a trade deal with the Taliban if he were to secure reelection in 2024. The former president laid out his plans to regain control of Bagram Airfield, criticizing the decision to hand it over to Afghan forces. Trump claimed that China had occupied the facility, situated near areas allegedly used for manufacturing nuclear missiles.
Trump argued that the strategic location of Bagram Airfield, in proximity to China, was crucial for monitoring the Asian giant. He suggested that negotiating a trade deal with Afghanistan could pave the way for the return of the airfield under U.S. control. Despite the challenges posed by the diplomatic relationship with the Taliban, Trump expressed confidence in reclaiming Bagram Airfield if he were to be re-elected.
The former president's remarks in Iowa were part of his broader campaign efforts to rally support ahead of the state's upcoming caucuses. Trump focused on organizational strategies for the 2024 race, using the Bagram issue as a key talking point.
