Turkmenistan is ready to significantly expand its partnership with Iran in the field of re-exporting its natural gas to third countries through swaps (on a reimbursable basis). This was stated by Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, whose speech at an economic forum in Ashgabat was quoted by TASS.
"At present, joint work is being carried out in the gas industry on a swap scheme that will allow Turkmen natural gas to be supplied to third countries. The Turkmen side is ready to significantly expand such a partnership."
Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan has been supplying gas to Azerbaijan via Iran since the beginning of 2022.
These swaps help supply natural gas to Iranian provinces such as Rezavi, North and South Khorasan, Golestan and Semnan, which are far from national gas resources.
Iraq, which is negotiating with Iran to receive up to 9bn cubic metres of Turkmen gas a year, wants to use a similar scheme.
