The Kazakh authorities have imposed a block on Sputnik24, a service that broadcasts Russian state-controlled television channels in Kazakhstan, as reported by the Kazakh media outlet, Arbat Media, on November 18.
The authorities cited the lack of a proper operating license in Kazakhstan as the reason for this action, with the order to block the channels having been signed as early as June.
Sputnik24 is listed by one of the Kremlin’s major propaganda television channels, RT, as a platform for viewing its content, according to the independent Russian media outlet, the Moscow Times.
This move follows a similar action taken by Moldova on October 24, where access to 22 Russian media sites was blocked. The Moldovan authorities stated these sites were being used in an “information war” against the country. The blocked sites, all Russian, included popular state-run or controlled outlets like RT, NTV, and Ren TV, among others.
Despite the historically close ties between Astana and Moscow, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has asserted that Kazakhstan will not recognize the occupied Ukrainian regions as Russian territory. In a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2023, President Tokayev was thanked for providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
