Uzbekistan's Topalang reservoir project to supply 90% of water by 2024
In a meeting held in Termiz in 2021, the President of Uzbekistan addressed the pressing issue of drinking water in the Surkhandarya region, where centralized water supply was only at 60%. Highlighting the vast and clean resource of the "Topalang" water reservoir, the President tasked the development of a project to bring this valuable water source to the population.
The water in the Topalang basin comes from the melting of snow and ice in the mountains, boasting a hardness of 4% and rich in beneficial minerals. The ambitious social project aims to improve water accessibility for the residents of Surkhandarya.
The comprehensive project involves laying 380 kilometers of metal pipes from the reservoir to the city of Termiz, including 159 kilometers of highways and 221 kilometers of internal networks connecting cities and districts. The plan also includes the construction of water treatment, pressure reduction, and water collection facilities. Currently, 147 kilometers of pipelines have been laid, and water purification, pressure reduction, and five water collection facilities have been established.
On November 16, the first stage of the project was inaugurated in the "Boghistan" neighborhood of Saryosi district, with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev ceremonially initiating the flow of water. This initial phase has successfully provided centralized drinking water to Sariosia, Denov, Shorchi, and Kumkurgan districts, raising the region's water provision level to 70%.
An essential benefit of the project is the conservation of 8.6mn kilowatt-hours of electricity due to the efficient flow of water. The second phase of the project aims to increase centralized drinking water supply to 90%, benefiting approximately 2mn residents across several districts, including Sariosia, Denov, Shorchi, Kumkurgan, Jarkurgan, Bandikhon, Kyziriq, Sherabad, Angor, Muzrabot, and Termiz city.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2024.
