Uzbekistan is set to embark on a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative to develop its major railway stations, including Tashkent, Samarkand, and Kokand. This move aims to boost the income of Uzbekistan Temir Yollari, the country's national railway company. Deputy Minister of Transport Zhasurbek Choriev revealed these plans during the Verona Eurasian Economic Forum.
The PPP projects for these railway stations have already been prepared, with the intention of transferring terminals to private partnerships while retaining management control within Uzbekistan Temir Yollari's hands. Choriev emphasized the significance of this strategy, citing the challenges of generating revenue in the railway sector.
“This is the right direction, because Uzbekistan Temir Yollari cannot just make money on transportation or transit. You yourself know that our passenger transportation is subsidized, our prices are the lowest,” he said.
Uzbekistan Temir Yollari faces the issue of subsidizing passenger transportation and maintaining the lowest ticket prices.
Choriev stressed that these PPP projects are designed to provide an avenue for additional revenue that the national railway company had previously not explored. He also acknowledged that security concerns have been a factor in previous decision-making.
