Chairman of the People's Counci of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, speaking at the summit of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) in Astana, proposed to prepare a roadmap for the development of cooperation in the energy sector, state agency Turkmenistan's state agency reports.
"Turkmenistan currently sends its natural gas to neighbouring and brotherly countries Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. At the same time, there are opportunities to transport Turkmen natural gas across the Caspian Sea to Azerbaijan, Turkey, and in the future to bring it to the world markets. I am confident that we will solve all the necessary issues together with our brotherly countries in the nearest future".
Turkmenistan also exports electricity to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, and in the future, according to Berdimuhamedov, there will be an opportunity to supply electricity to Azerbaijan and Turkey via the Caspian Sea.
"Having rich oil and gas fields, Turkmenistan pursues a policy of reliable and safe energy exports to world markets, in particular, Turkmen natural gas and electricity are supplied to neighbouring countries and states in the region."
According to World Energy, Turkmenistan's gas production in 2022 was 78.3bn cubic metres of gas, up from 79.3bn a year earlier and 66.0bn in 2020. Turkmenistan supplied gas to China (a key buyer), Azerbaijan (via Iran), Russia and Uzbekistan. The main production of raw materials is provided by the state-owned concern Turkmengaz.
