Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a law that revokes the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. This legislation has been officially posted on the Legal Information Bureau's internet portal. The law takes effect immediately upon its official publication.
The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly back in 1996. While several countries, including Russia, have ratified this document, the United States and China have not yet ratified it. This provides the Russian government with the means to retract their ratification, as President Putin indicated during a meeting at the Valdai discussion club on October 5th.
In response to Putin's announcement, Vyacheslav Volodin, the Speaker of the State Duma, disclosed that the lower chamber of the parliament would deliberate on the matter of discontinuing the treaty's ratification. On October 18, the State Duma passed the necessary legislation, and on October 25, it was approved by the Federation Council.
Earlier, Russia has conducted a successful test of its capacity to carry out a massive retaliatory nuclear strike using land, sea, and air-based delivery systems, as per a statement from the Kremlin.
