The European Commission has initiated an investigation into the social media platforms Meta (Facebook, Instagram) and TikTok concerning the spread of "false information" and "illegal content" following the recent Hamas attack on Israel.
According Euronews, Brussels has called upon the leadership of these two platforms to provide detailed information about the measures they are taking to prevent such occurrences, as stated in the press release.
The European Commission clarified that they submitted an official request for information from Meta and TikTok about a week after initiating a similar procedure regarding X (formerly Twitter) in compliance with the new European legislation on digital services known as the Digital Services Act (DSA).
Meta is required to furnish the requested information to the Commission by October 25, regarding the specified questions, and by November 8, concerning election integrity. Based on Meta's responses, the Commission will determine its next steps, which could potentially lead to the formal commencement of an investigation in accordance with Article 66 of the DSA.
The Commission can impose fines for providing false, incomplete, or misleading information in response to information requests. In case of non-compliance, the European Commission may decide on information requests through a decision. In such a scenario, failure to respond within the stipulated timeframe could result in periodic fines.
