In a historic gathering of leaders and delegates from around the globe, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan welcomed participants to the 25th session of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization, held in the magnificent city of Samarkand. This symbolic location, an ancient gem along the Great Silk Road and a modern tourist hub of New Uzbekistan set the stage for the pivotal discussions and initiatives that would shape the future of the world tourism industry.
In his address, President Mirziyoyev highlighted the profound impact of the tourism sector on the global economy, acknowledging that, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, it accounted for approximately 10% of the world's gross domestic product and 7% of its exports. However, the pandemic dealt a severe blow to this vital sector, leading to a significant reduction in tourism export revenues and the loss of millions of jobs.
Yet, the global tourism industry has shown remarkable resilience and recovery, thanks to the concerted efforts of the World Tourism Organization and its member countries. In 2022, approximately 1 bn tourists ventured abroad, representing a substantial recovery, though not yet reaching pre-pandemic levels. This number is anticipated to further increase in the upcoming year.
The President highlighted tourism's vital role in economic recovery, stating that "every dollar invested in the industry will bring 3-4 times the future income" and that each new job created can lead to the creation of two more jobs in other sectors. Tourism, he emphasized, is essential for ensuring general well-being and sustainable development in countries and fostering cultural exchanges and tolerance among peoples.
The President's speech covered several key proposals aimed at strengthening international cooperation and advancing the tourism industry:
- Global Safe Tourism Code: President Mirziyoyev called for the development of a Global Safe Tourism Code under the United Nations to establish a robust legal framework for international tourism, especially in the face of conflicts and instability.
- "Green" Tourism: In response to growing environmental concerns, he advocated for an international action program for the development of "green" tourism, suggesting the establishment of the "Best City for the Implementation of Green Tourism" nomination.
- World Inclusive Tourism Year: President Mirziyoyev urged the declaration of 2025 as the "World Inclusive Tourism Year" to enhance conditions for tourists with disabilities and develop inclusive tourism infrastructure.
- Council of Historic Cities on Tourism: He proposed the creation of a Council of Historic Cities on Tourism under the World Tourism Organization, aimed at promoting cultural heritage sites, sharing best practices, and formulating effective solutions.
- International Tourism Academy: Uzbekistan's President inaugurated the International Tourism Academy, a unique institution that will provide specialized training and qualifications for tourism professionals. Grants will be provided for talented specialists from member countries.
- World Youth Tourism Summit: President Mirziyoyev suggested the organization of the World Youth Tourism Summit in Tashkent, offering a platform for young individuals to engage in tourism development projects and innovative ideas.
- Silk Road Brand Award: To promote the "Silk Road" brand, he recommended the establishment of an international award, with the new "Tourism on the Silk Road" thematic office actively participating in the initiative.
- Global Media Campus: The President proposed the establishment of a Global Media Campus, bringing together media, journalists, and travel bloggers to harness their collective strength and enthusiasm. This platform would host forums every two years, coinciding with the General Assembly sessions.
The 25th session of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization thus commenced with a resounding call for international collaboration and innovative solutions to ensure the growth and resilience of the global tourism industry. As Samarkand's history symbolizes the connection between East and West, President Mirziyoyev's address embodies a vision of unity, progress, and prosperity for all nations through tourism.
