Intellectual property rights infringement has been increasingly prevalent in Uzbekistan, with many violations occurring online. In response to this concerning trend, deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis have approved a bill in its initial reading to enhance the country's intellectual property protection system.
While efforts to safeguard intellectual property rights have intensified, the message is that the number of offences in this domain continues to escalate. Eighty-one law violation cases were recorded, surging to 887 in 2021 and spiking to 1209 in 2022.
As highlighted during the meeting, a considerable proportion of these violations were committed via the Internet, with 31% of the copyright and related rights offences occurring online in 2022.
Deputies emphasized that adopting the proposed law will establish a more robust framework for safeguarding intellectual property within the digital realm, specifically copyrights and related rights. The objective is to prevent potential offences and ensure more reliable protection in the online environment.
