On September 30, the Ministry of Energy organized an informative press tour for media representatives, journalists, and bloggers to the state-of-the-art thermal power plant with a remarkable capacity of 1500 MW. This power plant is currently under construction in the Syrdarya region by the Saudi Arabian company "ACWA Power."
The Issiklik power plant is strategically located in the Shirin city and Boyovut districts of the Syrdarya region, and it is slated to become a beacon of modern energy efficiency. The plant features the installation of the world's most advanced and energy-efficient gas turbines supplied by Mitsubishi of Japan.
An exciting milestone is approaching as the first 500 MW capacity of this power plant is expected to be commissioned in the early part of October. Furthermore, if an additional 500 MW is brought online by the end of the current period, the Integrated Energy System (IES) will be operating at full capacity by the first quarter of 2024.
This significant project, with an overall investment of $1.2bn, has been undertaken by the Saudi Arabian company "ACWA Power" through direct investments. Once fully operational, the power station is projected to generate a substantial 12bn kWh of electricity annually. It's noteworthy that the installation of cutting-edge, energy-saving technologies will save 1.1bn cubic meters of natural gas each year.
Beyond its substantial contribution to the energy sector, the project has also been an employment catalyst. During the construction phase, the power station engaged up to 2,000 workers. After commissioning, it will continue to provide livelihoods with 120 new job opportunities.
This transformative investment project was initiated based on the decision of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as outlined in the document No. PQ-4799, signed on August 10, 2020. The decision delineates the measures for the construction of this new thermal power plant with an impressive capacity of 1,500 MW in the Sirdarya region, marking a substantial stride in Uzbekistan's energy infrastructure.
