A delegation from Turkmenistan is participating in a meeting with the leaders of Central Asian countries and the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations, the state agency Turkmen Khabarlary reports.
The Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty (People's Assembly) of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, proposed the participation of German firms in water projects, incorporating the mega-project focusing on the complete modernisation of the infrastructure of the Karakum Canal.
"The implementation of these measures, we see in close cooperation with international organisations and foreign countries." Berdimuhamedov noted that "the shortage of water resources is a serious problem in many regions of the world today due to global climatic changes, large-scale and sometimes uncontrolled economic activities of economic entities of individual states."
The Karakum Canal, constructed during the Soviet era, originates from the Amu Darya river, and traverses the Karakum Desert, the Murghab Oasis, the Murghab-Tedjen interfluve before finally reaching the foothills of the Kopetdag Mountains.
