The Ministry of Environment in Egypt has announced the temporary closure of a beach in the renowned Red Sea city of Dahab, located in South Sinai. This decision follows a recent shark attack incident that left an Egyptian woman injured. The Ministry, in a statement on September 13, confirmed the victim's condition as stable, although specific details regarding the exact location of the attack and the extent of the injuries were not provided, Ahram Online reported.
Details of the Shark Attack
The shark attack incident occurred earlier on the day of the announcement, prompting swift action by local authorities. While the Ministry did not specify the exact location, social media reports indicate that the incident took place at Dahab's Laguna Beach. Tragically, it has been reported on social media that the victim lost her left arm in the shark attack.
Response from the Ministry of Environment
Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad immediately responded to the incident by issuing instructions to form a committee tasked with assessing the situation and investigating the causes of the shark attack. The Ministry of Environment's spokeswoman, Heba Matouk, informed Ahram Online that the duration of the beach closure has not been determined as the situation is still under assessment.
This incident follows a recent shark-related event in mid-August when Dahab beaches were temporarily closed for 24 hours. The closure came after a viral video showed a shark swimming close to the shorelines of Dahab's promenade beach. The authorities later determined that the area was safe, and the beaches were reopened.
This incident is the latest in a series of shark attacks along the Red Sea coast in Egypt. Just three months ago, in July 2022, a Tiger shark attack in the city of Hurghada resulted in the tragic death of a 24-year-old Russian national. In the same month, two women lost their lives in a shark attack off the coast of Hurghada.
Reports from specialists on Red Sea protectorates and the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association indicate that the presence of sharks in shallow waters during the summer months is attributed to their mating and egg-laying season.
