Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made an important proposal to increase the quantity of processed grain intended for delivery to impoverished nations.
This proposal comes as a response to a recent initiative put forth by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Under this initiative, Russia plans to provide Turkey with 1 million tons of grain at a reduced price, and Qatar will provide the necessary financial support.
According to kommersant, President Erdogan discussed this proposal in detail with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the G20 summit. During their discussions, Erdogan not only expressed his support for the plan but also suggested the possibility of expanding the volume of grain processing beyond the initially proposed amount. Both Qatar and Turkey view this project as highly advantageous.
It's worth noting that Russia had previously exited a grain deal in mid-July due to perceived shortcomings on the Russian side. However, in late August, President Putin introduced the idea of supplying 1 million tons of grain to Turkey at favorable terms, with the stipulation that Qatar would provide financial backing.
The grains supplied to Turkey will be processed into flour within Turkish facilities, and the resulting flour will then be distributed to the most economically disadvantaged nations. This initiative is expected to make a substantial impact on global food security.
As of September 6, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the existence of a fundamental agreement between Russia and Turkey regarding the grain supply. Implementation of this initiative is now set to commence.
