The Member of Parliament of Kyrgyzstan, Dastan Bekeshev, announced on his Telegram channel that the Committee on Budget and Finance has received a draft agreement with Azerbaijan regarding the construction of a luxurious five-star hotel on the pristine shores of Issyk-Kul Lake. The picturesque Issyk-Kul region has long been a favorite destination for tourists seeking natural beauty and tranquility.
The proposed project, set to transform the tourism landscape in the region, entails the allocation of 17 hectares of land in the picturesque Kara-Oi village. This land allocation includes provisions for a 12-hectare development area, a 4-hectare park, and a 1-hectare beach area, which will be accessible to all citizens.
Under the terms of the draft agreement, the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan has committed to providing essential infrastructure support and constructing a road leading to the resort. Furthermore, the hotel is set to benefit from a tax exemption for a period of 10 years. The land itself will be made available for a period of 49 years, with the option to extend its use. In return, Azerbaijan has pledged to complete the construction of the hotel within three years and ensure that 70% of the workforce is comprised of Kyrgyzstan citizens.
The announcement has sparked a debate among local entrepreneurs and lawmakers, with Dastan Bekeshev raising questions about the feasibility of such agreements for local businesses.
"I wonder if there are local entrepreneurs who would agree to build resorts with such conditions?" he asked.
The query underscores the potential challenges and opportunities that such foreign investments may bring to the region's economy.
The proposed development holds the promise of boosting tourism in the Issyk-Kul region, potentially attracting more visitors to experience the breathtaking beauty of the lake and its surroundings. If executed successfully, it could provide a significant economic stimulus to the area, generating jobs and revenue.
However, as discussions and negotiations continue, it remains to be seen how this project will impact the local economy and whether it will lead to increased cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan in the realm of tourism and hospitality.
