In the Montenegrin resort village of Brezna, the annual competition for the title of "The Laziest Citizen" has been ongoing for a remarkable twenty days, featuring seven contenders vying for a cash reward.
Last year, the record for reclining in a horizontal position was set at an impressive 117 hours during the Brezna resort competition. However, this year's event began on Thursday, August 7th, and the remaining participants have boldly proclaimed their unwavering commitment to persevere.
According to CNN, Dubravka Aksich, the reigning champion from 2021 at the age of 38, remarked, "We all feel great, health issues are non-existent; they are just an unnecessary nuisance. Our sole task is to stay prone."
Radonja Blagoevich stated that the event's organizer and resort owner, this competition was initiated twelve years ago in the small Adriatic nation with the intention of playfully debunking the prevailing stereotype that Montenegrins are inherently lazy.
She revealed that among the initial field of twenty-one participants, seven individuals are currently in the supine position, amounting to a collective total of 463 hours.
The competition's regulations strictly prohibit any form of standing or sitting, and any violation leads to immediate disqualification. However, participants are granted a ten-minute respite every eight hours for essential restroom breaks.
Contestants are allowed to indulge in reading, as well as using mobile phones and laptops during their reclined state.
One hopeful contender, a twenty-three-year-old named Filip Knezevic, hailing from the northern city of Mojkovac, exuded confidence in his ability to secure victory and claim the €1000 prize. He remarked,
"We have all our necessities here, and the camaraderie is exceptional; time seems to fly by.", he said.
