As part of the Harmful Emissions Reduction Plan (ULEZ), the UK government is implementing a daily entry fee for the zone of the so-called Greater London.
According to Euronews, this measure will affect gas-powered cars up until the year 2006 and diesel cars up until the year 2015.
" For too long, London's least privileged residents have suffered from car dominance, where vehicles took precedence in the city's infrastructure. We want to start a reversal. We know that by 2030, we need to reduce car usage by at least 25%. And ULEZ is just one small step that will help us achieve this goal." - stated Hirra Khan Adeogun, Deputy Director of Possible
Starting from 2019, similar rules were only applied for entering central London. Henceforth, this law will impact over 9 million people, including many of its critics.
"Because of this plan, I won't be able to afford my university tuition. Because of the ULEZ charge, I won't be able to commute to work. I won't be able to go see my doctor at Brompton Hospital, because as soon as I leave my house, I'll have to spend £12.50 for ULEZ and another £15 for congestion" - said student Hirbod Pirnia.
According to political analysts, making such a decision against the backdrop of inflation might influence the upcoming London mayoral elections scheduled for May 2024.
