President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales will resign on Friday following a kiss from women's national team player Jennifer Hermoso, as reported by COPE.
During the award ceremony for the winners of the Women's World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, Rubiales hugged and kissed Hermoso on the lips.
Many journalists and fans deemed his actions excessive. The head of RFEF apologized for his behavior; however, the federation has called for an extraordinary assembly due to the president's actions, scheduled for August 25.
Additionally, the International Football Federation (FIFA) has initiated proceedings against Rubiales.
Rubiales decided to leave RFEF upon realizing that some were planning to demand his resignation. It's noted that he has already informed his team that he will officially leave the organization on August 25.
Earlier, a number of Spanish government officials called for Rubiales to step down. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez considered the official's apologies inadequate.
