Typhoon Talim, the first typhoon to hit China this year, made landfall on the evening of July 17, causing authorities to issue flood warnings, cancel flights and trains, and advise people to stay at home, Reuters reports.
The storm battered the port city of Zhanjiang in Guangdong province, with images shown by state broadcaster CCTV depicting strong rain and powerful winds.

According to the Guangdong weather bureau, Talim, the fourth typhoon of the year, made landfall at 10:20 p.m. (14:20 GMT) in Zhanjiang city, with winds near the center reaching speeds of up to 136.8 kph (85 mph). While the storm did not reach the severe typhoon category, winds stronger than 150 kph, which is uncommon for this early in the rainy season, were observed.
Talim is expected to continue moving northwest at a speed of 20 km per hour into the Guangxi region on July 18, as reported by the Guangdong weather bureau. Meanwhile, rescue operations were underway in the southern Fujian province, where the typhoon caused widespread flooding.
Footage from the Fuzhou Fire Department showed residents being transported through flooded roads, a result of heavy rainfall brought by the outer edges of Typhoon Talim, as confirmed by the Fujian Meteorological Bureau.
Although Talim weakened into a tropical storm after making landfall in Guangdong province, it is anticipated to dissipate further and head towards northern Vietnam, according to China's Meteorological Administration.
