Israel has announced its plan to purchase an additional 25 F-35 fighter jets from the United States, significantly expanding its fleet and deepening its partnership with the U.S.
The Israeli Defense Ministry made the announcement on July 2, revealing that the $3bn deal would increase Israel's arsenal of F-35 stealth fighter jets by 50%. Israel is currently the sole country in the Middle East operating these advanced aircraft.
The F-35, known as the world's most advanced fighter jet, has been a key component of Israel's military capabilities. The new purchase will bring Israel's total fleet of F-35s to 75, and the deal is expected to be finalized in the coming months, as per the Israeli Defense Ministry.
Financing for the acquisition will be facilitated through American military aid to Israel. Additionally, the aircraft manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, and engine maker, Pratt & Whitney, have committed to involving Israeli companies in the production process. This collaboration will ensure the continuation of cooperation between American companies and Israeli defense industries in the manufacturing of aircraft components, as stated in the ministry's announcement.
The decision to expand Israel's F-35 fleet comes amidst heightened tensions between Israel and Iran. Israel, considering Iran as its greatest enemy, has utilized F-35 jets in the past to intercept Iranian drones. Furthermore, Israel has previously issued threats to carry out long-range strikes on Iranian nuclear targets. Israel accuses Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons, a claim that Iran vehemently denies. Over the years, Israel is also believed to have been involved in several targeted attacks on Iranian nuclear experts and facilities within Iran.
In recent years, Israel has actively sought to counter Iranian influence in neighboring Syria. On July 2, Israel conducted an airstrike on the city of Homs in Syria, adding to the hundreds of strikes it has carried out on government-controlled areas of Syria. These actions reflect Israel's ongoing efforts to prevent Iranian entrenchment in the region.
The purchase of additional F-35 fighter jets underscores Israel's commitment to maintaining a strong military deterrent and safeguarding its national security. The advanced capabilities of the F-35 aircraft will enhance Israel's ability to respond to emerging threats and bolster its defensive capabilities in the face of regional challenges. The deepening partnership with the United States further solidifies Israel's position as a key strategic ally in the Middle East.
