Lin Wenhuan, a spokesperson for Taiwan's Defense Ministry, said Taiwan's military forces would be obliged to destroy Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) planes and ships if they approached the 12-mile (approximately 22.2 km) zone near the island without notice. He stated that this move is being done to ensure the security of the Taiwan Strait.
A spokeswoman from Taiwan's Defense Department stressed that after Chinese planes or ships cross the Taiwan Strait's middle line, the island's armed forces closely watch their subsequent movements.
"If Chinese People's Liberation Army soldiers continue to disregard our warnings and breach our airspace and waterways, we will act promptly to preserve national security," according to Lin Wenhuang.
Taiwan's Ministry of Defense reported five ships and 19 Chinese People's Liberation Army planes approaching the island on June 24. At least eight planes managed to breach the Taiwan Strait's centre line. They approached the sea regions 24 miles (approximately 44.5 kilometres) from the island's shore.
Chinese Defense Minister Li Shanfu stated in early June that the Chinese government is dedicated to peaceful reunification with Taiwan. At the same time, he did not rule out the use of force if Taiwan were to secede from the mainland.
