The mass death of saigas in the Karaganda region was explained in the Ministry of Ecology.
On June 26, 86 saiga carcasses were found in the Kulan River in the Nurinsky district of the Karaganda region. Experts managed to establish the cause of the mass death of animals, Tengrinews.kz reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.
According to the agency, the carcasses of dead saigas have signs of decomposition, which made it impossible to determine their gender. At the same time, no traces of shots or punctures were found in the upper layer of the skin of the animals.
"The carcasses of dead saigas were fished out of the water, taken to a special range, and destroyed. The cause of death was drowning while crossing the river,"
the Ministry of Ecology said.
Earlier, it was reported that about a hundred saigas were found dead in the Karaganda region.
The Saiga antelope, also known as Saiga tatarica and S. borealis mongolica, is a large herbivore that migrates across the grasslands and deserts of Central Asia. The saiga population has undergone a catastrophic decline in numbers due to poaching, decreasing from over 1.5mn to just 50,000 across its range in the 1990s.
