Germany has unveiled its inaugural national security strategy, which identifies Russia as the foremost threat to both Germany's security and the broader Euro-Atlantic region, Bloomberg reports.
The strategy also emphasizes the importance of fostering cooperation with China while setting a policy goal of allocating at least 2% of annual production to defense expenditure.
Russia is presently perceived as the most significant peril to peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic area in the document. Regarding China, the German government acknowledges that competition has intensified in recent years while recognizing China's indispensability as a partner in addressing crucial global challenges.
The adoption of the strategy was preceded by several months of dispute among the ruling alliance parties, with opposition lawmakers accusing the government of prioritizing partisan interests over the nation's needs. Nils Schmid, the foreign policy spokesman for Olaf Scholz, stated that the new security strategy lays a vital foundation for reinforcing Germany's foreign policy objectives and principles.
Schmid further emphasized the necessity for a more assertive stance due to Russia's aggressive acts of war and authoritarian inclinations in other regions across the globe.
