Russia expressed its readiness to assist Uzbekistan in joining the World Trade Organization (WTO). The country's Minister of Economic Development, Maksim Reshetnikov, has stressed the significance of integrating Uzbekistan into the global economy, media reports.
Uzbekistan has been striving to become a member of the WTO since 1994 when it was granted observer status in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. While the process had been temporarily halted, it resumed in 2020. The message states that the working group has already conducted five meetings to deliberate on the republic's accession to the WTO.
Reportedly, the Russian Federation became the 156th WTO member in August 2012.
Uzbekistan has made its intentions clear in its efforts to expedite the process of its accession to the WTO and to implement extensive reforms in its trade and economic policies. During the sixth meeting of the Working Party on the Accession of Uzbekistan on March 14, members reiterated their support for Uzbekistan's aim of becoming a WTO member while highlighting the significance of ensuring its trade policies are fully compliant with WTO regulations.
A total of 123 WTO Members and 1 Observer welcomed Uzbekistan’s efforts to integrate into the multilateral trading system.
