Daryo correspondent reports that Aziz Abduhakimov, Minister of Natural Resources, talked about new legislative proposals when penalties for cutting down or causing damage to trees might be toughened in Uzbekistan during the “Save the Trees” initiative held on April 20.
"We can see that the penalties are very weak. The eco-fines from a meagre 300,000 to 1.5 million soums are not effective. Therefore, we have now proposed to make appropriate amendments to the Code of Administrative Responsibility. After these changes the financial sanctions will also multiply," Abduhakimov said.
"Current punishment is often applied to officials and individuals. However, penalties are not applied to business owners. If the changes we propose are accepted, heavy sanctions will also be applied to commercial companies. In addition, the damage caused to flora and fauna will also be classified as a serious crime," the chief environmentalist of Uzbekistan noted.
