Uzbek-born Russian rhythmic gymnastics coach Irina Viner has been suspended from international competitions in rhythmic gymnastics for two years. This was reported in a press release from the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).
The removal of Irina Viner is connected with her “offensive statements” in the media after the defeat of the Russian rhythmic gymnastics team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. According to the press release, the statements of the coach of the Russian team, violate the FIG rules.
Suspension by the FIG Disciplinary Commission means that Irina Viner is prohibited from participating in or receiving accreditation in any role in international competitions under the auspices of the FIG, including as a coach.
At the same time, it is noted that the two-year ban comes into force one day after the FIG sanctions against Russia, imposed in connection with a special military operation in Ukraine, are lifted.
At the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, participants from Russia did not receive gold medals for the first time since 1996. Delegations from the Russian Federation filed protests against the judges' scores, but this did not bring any results. The post of head of the technical committee of the international federation was then occupied by Natalia Kuzmina. It was with her work that
Irina Viner, wife of Russian tycoon Alisher Usmanov blamed Natalia Kuzmina, then head of the technical committee of the international federation for the poor results.
