The economy of Turkmenistan, Central Asia's largest natural gas producer, grew by 6.2 percent in January-February 2023, the same level as a year ago.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said at a government meeting that "the independent state continues to develop dynamically."
In the reporting period, natural gas production increased by 1.6 percent compared to a year earlier, electricity production by 6.3 percent, and foreign trade by 3.4 percent.
Reportedly, in addition to Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan supplies its gas to China, Russia, and Azerbaijan (via Iran) and electricity to Afghanistan, Iran, and Kyrgyzstan (in transit via Uzbekistan). Ashgabat also supplies world markets with petroleum products, textiles, mineral fertilizers, and foodstuffs.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) expects Turkmenistan's economic growth of 6.5 percent in 2023, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to be 5.8 percent, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to be 2.3 percent.
