A recent World Bank study, Listening to the Kyrgyz Republic, revealed that 89% of respondents believe Kyrgyzstan is progressing positively in political, social, and economic reforms. The findings were presented at the Presidential Administration's "Yntymak-Ordo," with Akylbek Zhaparov, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration, highlighting the results.
The study, which has monitored socio-economic well-being since December 2021, reflects improvements in various aspects of life for Kyrgyz citizens. Financial security saw an increase, with 75% of households feeling financially secure in October 2024, compared to just 33% in December 2021.
Food security also showed substantial progress, with the proportion of food-secure households doubling from 41% to 86%, indicating better food availability and strengthened systems. Additionally, fewer households are now forced to reduce consumption or sell assets to meet basic needs, showcasing improved economic resilience.
Indicators of government transparency and anti-corruption efforts have also shown remarkable progress. Trust in open dialogue between citizens and the government increased. Among the urban population, this figure rose from 46% in December 2021 to 77%, while in rural areas, it grew from 61% to 79%. Fiscal confidence has also surged, with 85% of respondents expressing trust in the government’s fiscal policies, up from 53% during the same period.
The survey noted a decline in migration trends. The share of households with migrants fell from 14% to 8%, while only 1% of households now consider migration as an option, compared to 13% in 2021. This reduction reflects improved economic conditions under the leadership of President Sadyr Japarov, as more citizens find opportunities within the country.
Akylbek Zhaparov acknowledged the findings during the presentation, stating: "The objective results of the World Bank's study confirm significant positive changes under President S.N. Japarov’s leadership since December 2021, greatly improving the socio-economic well-being of Kyrgyz citizens."
The Listening to the Kyrgyz Republic project is a monthly World Bank panel survey tracking 1,500 households across the country. It assesses key dimensions of well-being, such as food security, labor markets, remittances, and public opinion on economic management. Launched in December 2021, the study provides critical insights into the evolving livelihoods of Kyrgyz citizens.
